Spring Turkey Season Begins Today

The spring turkey season opens today and runs through May 15th.

“To hunt turkeys in the spring, residents need a resident turkey license and a game bird stamp for 2011,” said Conservation Officer Keith Wildeman. “Birds that are harvested are required to be checked in within 48 hours at an official check station and there are several throughout Starke County.”

The Turkey Tracks event will be held this weekend, the first weekend of spring turkey season. This event gives physically challenged hunters a chance to experience the joy of hunting. Officer Wildeman said he helped with last year’s event and had a great time.

“Last year was my first chance to be a part of being around it and it is a really great program. It was great to see all the smiles at the end of the weekend. There was some tired folks, but they did get a chance to get out, try some hunting and do something new.”
