Starke County Relay for Life Focuses on Survivors

The Starke County Relay for Life event is this Friday and Saturday and event chairperson, Megan Hamand, says the committee is really trying to get the survivors engaged in the event.

“What they’ve gone through, it’s an amazing victory and they really deserve to be celebrated,” said Hamand. “We have a new survivor chair, Michelle Downs, who is really passionate about survivor engagement. We’ve got a special scavenger hunt for them, we have a special lap just dedicated to survivors and caregivers, we have prizes, we have a reception with a birthday cake because a world with less cancer is a world with more birthdays.”

And there will be plenty of live entertainment during the event for you to enjoy.

“We’ve got great live entertainment. If you’ve ever been to our Relays in the past few years, you know that 27 Entertainment comes and gets the party started with their owner, Wade Breitzke. We also have Dirt Cheap Band and they will be playing at 8:00 p.m. DJ Express will be from midnight to the wee morning hours and Narrowgate will be closing things off for us. They’re another local band and they will be playing at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday.”

The annual Starke County Relay for Life event will be held at the Starke County Fairgrounds in Hamlet beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. The opening ceremonies will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. If you would like to join a team, it’s not too late. Call Megan at 772-2144 for more information.
