Arrowhead Engineering has closed its doors! That was the news story we led with back in 1977 on this date. Precision pulleys for the auto industry were manufactured at Arrowhead Engineering. Although the shutdown was initially for a two week period, the workers were not optimistic. It eventually closed its doors for good putting 100 workers out of work.

On this date in 1970, George Ciboch died. He was 49 at the time of his death. Mr. Ciboch, of North Judson, had been a survivor of the Bataan Death March. Starke County had two survivors of the Bataan Death March. Besides George Ciboch, there was Delbert Beam.

Of the 75,000 American and Filipino prisoners of war who made the death march, 11,000 died before they made it 60 miles to the holding center. They were suffering from malnutrition and infected with tropical diseases.

A 96-year-old Bataan Death March survivor died in June in Massachusetts. There are not many of these American heroes left.
