Knox Redskin Brigade to March in Regional Competition with Heavy Hearts

Drew Shearin

The Knox community continues to mourn the loss of Knox High School Junior, Drew Shearin. Drew died in a car accident on State Road 8 east of Knox late Monday night.

Drew was a Drum Major for the Knox Redskin Brigade, who is set to take the field Saturday for the ISSMA Regional Marching Band competition to compete for a chance for the State title in Indianapolis on October 29th. Director Craige Phipps says that the band will march in Chesterton this Saturday.

“They’re just a tremendous group of kids that no matter what you do and whatever you put in front of them, they rise to that challenge. This is no different. In the face of this adversity, they’ve decided that we’re going to push forward and they’ve already decided that they want to dedicate their performance to Drew,” said Phipps.

“We’ll do some form of memorial for him during this weekend’s contest. It might be his hat on the podium or have his instrument there, or something. We’re going to meet with the kids and discuss what exactly their wants and needs are for the rest of the week. We’ve got a breakfast planned for them Saturday morning that was in the works even before this. We’ll move forward with that, and then rehearsal and then off to Chesterton.”

A candlelight vigil is scheduled for this evening from 8:00-11:00 p.m. at the Knox High School band tower.

Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the crash. The Rannells Funeral Home, Hamlet Chapel is handling funeral arrangements.
