Eastern Pulaski School Board Discusses Summer School

Eastern Pulaski School Superintendent Dr. Robert Klitzman talked about summer school with the School Board this week.

“As it is true the last few years, it will be very limited because the funding for summer school is very limited,” explained Dr. Klitzman. “We’re going to offer one of our most popular ones, Summer P.E. Summer P.E. is open to any high school student and any student entering high school, which means our 8th graders. We typically get 50 to 60 kids into that program and it’s a wonderful situation in that it’s a block of time so students will have three-and-a-half hours in the morning to go somewhere and do something that is going to take more than a typical 50 minute class period.”

More academic classes will be offered as well.

“We also have the opportunity for students that may need an additional credit in Math or English because they have to make it up, or for whatever reason. We partner with the Indiana Virtual Academy and they offer the program all online, we facilitate it and offer the final testing. The State pays for a net portion of summer school, but we have a $25 fee for the students and we use that to make up the shortfall in the event summer school is not fully funded, which in most years, it is not.”

A unique “blended class” will be initiated this summer.

“We are going to offer high school senior government. A portion of the class will be offered online and a portion will require students to come in for regular class time for some face-to-face time with the teacher. If this works out well and we hope it does, we may pursue this down the road and do this again maybe even during the school year.”
