Former Congressma John Hiler is celebrating his 59th birthday today. Also born on this date 85 years ago was the late G. Edward Cook. Mr. Hiler represented Starke County as a U.S. Representative, and Mr. Cook represented us as a State Representative.

13 years ago today in 1999 Rex Cudworth and 10 other Pulaski County Highway workers won $168,000 on the Hoosier Millionaire. The 11 started buying lottery tickets with the idea of sharing their winnings. After taxes, the 11 received $11,000 each.

On this date in 1995, the Starke County Commissioners approved the expenditure of $95,000 to repair the Starke County Courthouse. The repairs included lowering the courthouse roof and chimneys and tuckpointing. The Starke County Courthouse stands three stories high. It was entered on the national Register of Historical Places on November 12th, 1986. The Richardsonian-Romanesque edifice was designed by Indiana architects, Wing and Mahurin, and built of Indiana limestone by the world famous Caldwell and Drake of Indiana, creators of West Baden Spring Hotel. The 138 foot structure is crowned with a special Seth Thomas Clock Tower. The courthouse was completed in 1898.

Finally in 1995 on this date, the groundbreaking ceremony was held to commemorate the first phase of the Estok Subdivison at the end of Henry Drive.
