Indiana Continues to Add New Private Sector Jobs

The number of private sector jobs in Indiana is still on the rise for the eighth consecutive month. In June alone, 1400 jobs were added in the private sector.

Indiana continues to outpace the U.S. job growth average of 0.9 percent with its average of 1.5 percent, and since July 2009 – the low point of employment – Indiana has added 140,000 private sector jobs. This 3.3 percent increase significantly exceeds the national rate of growth of just six percent.

According to Department of Workforce Development Commissioner Scott Sanders, manufacturing continues to lead the charge in Hoosier job growth. He says 2800 jobs have been added in that sector in June alone, bringing the 2012 year-to-date total to 15,100 new jobs in that sector. Of the 140,400 private sector jobs added in Indiana since July 2009, nearly half have come from the manufacturing sector. The hospitality industry is also offering server jobs and other hotel and restaurant-related job opportunities.

Despite these developments, and increases in Professional and Business Services and Financial Activities sectors Indiana’s unemployment rate crept up 0.1 percent to an even eight percent – still below the national average of 8.2 percent for the third consecutive month.
