Community Project Aims to Keep Senior Toes Warm This Winter

An annual community service project aiming to keep seniors warm kicks off on Saturday, Oct. 27. The Socks for Seniors Campaign looks to organize collecting new socks to be distributed to the elderly in local area nursing homes around the holidays.

The program begins with Make A Difference Day on Saturday, the official kickoff of the campaign which runs through Christmas. The event is looking for local area coordinators near Knox to help with collecting socks this year.

The program grew in 2011 to over 250 cities coast-to-coast, collecting socks to distribute to the elderly and shut-ins in local communities. The effort is completely volunteer-based, and the organization itself neither takes nor makes money from it; they collect only socks.

Volunteers are encouraged to host a sock drive for a local nursing home, assisted living center, or other senior community. All it takes is a decorated box or boxes to be placed around the community! For more information, visit www.socksforseniors.com.
