ABATE’s Toys for Kids Event Looks To Help More Than 200 Children

ABATE’s Toys for Kids event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 10 a.m. at the Knox VFW. ABATE Treasurer Deb Young said this is an invitation-only event and the members were able to help quite a few families this year.

“We have a total of 79 families and 214 children whom we have purchased gifts for,” explained Deb Young. “I’m very excited to see the kids on Saturday morning. Unfortunately, we’re not able to provide for all the children in Starke County so we do it by invitation.”

The Toys for Kids event has provided a happier Christmas for those families less fortunate in the Starke County area for several years. A number of fundraisers helps the organization purchase the toys for the children.

“We start in January and we try to come up with fundraisers that we can do throughout the year to raise the money,” Young explained. “We are the providers of the beverages at the Mint Festival which is a huge fundraiser for us. We also had a fundraiser through Kersting’s. We did a motorcycle ride there but that’s not going to happen this year so we need to come up with something else. Several businesses here in Starke County are great contributors around Christmastime for Toys for Kids.”

Young said it’s easy to donate toward the organization if you wish to do so.

“They can either mail a check to Starke County ABATE, 2380 S. 450 E., Knox, IN, or you can also go to Demotte State Bank where our account is and leave a donation there.”

The Starke County ABATE will be spending close to $9,000 to provide a happier Christmas for some wonderful children in the county.
