Alcohol-Related Accidents Cause Half Of Trauma Deaths

According to a study of the IU/Wishard Trauma Center, figures show that nearly half of all trauma deaths and non-fatal injuries nationwide are due to alcohol-related accidents.

More than three million people are hospitalized and 37 million seek out emergency treatment due to accidents. Dr. Charles Miramonti, who is in charge of Indianapolis EMS, says public awareness campaigns remain crucial.

“Over the last 13 years I’ve been in emergency departments, I haven’t seen a downshift,” said Dr. Miramonti. “I can’t say I’ve seen a huge impact. Even if two or three people make a different decision because of those educational announcements then that’s a huge impact!”

The warnings to people remain the same.

“Honestly, it’s with moderation, not minding their ps and qs with the alcohol, not following some of the basic things like designate a driver and being out of the roads late at night when you don’t need to be.”
