Local Libraries Planning Programs to Get a Jump on January

Henry F. Schricker Library

Several libraries in the area are getting a positive start to 2013 by offering a number of new programs to their visitors.

In Starke County, the Henry F. Schricker Public Library will show a recently-released documentary on the Grand Kankakee Marsh, entitled “Everglades of the North.” The documentary, which was released in the fall of 2011, explores the diverse ecology, illustrates the astonishing history, and unveils the controversial saga of the marshlands that were once known as the Northern Everglades.

Library Director Sheila Urwiler said the library will show the documentary on Jan. 16 at 1 p.m., and just one week later, a discussion panel will be held at the library featuring some of the documentary’s filmmakers, Jim Shilling from the Historical Society, and Kankakee River Basin Commission Director Jody Melton.

In Marshall County, the Culver-Union Township Public Library is planning Thursday Tech Time, an open discussion group for those interested in computers and technology. IT Director Andrew Baker explained the sessions, which are held on the third Thursday of each month, may feature a speaker and topic or they may simply be an open discussion.

Sessions are held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and Baker emphasized that every session is free and open to the public. The session planned for Jan. 17 will feature new innovations planned to release this year, as well as explain new devices, software, and other topics as well.
