In memory of Eric Corey, the Turkey Tracks annual hunt in Starke County is quickly approaching and the organization is gearing up with a Saturday banquet at the Washington Township Community Center on State Road 23. The fish dinner – more than a fish fry as in previous years – is being prepared by the San Pierre Fire Department with all-you-can-eat fish, baked potatoes, green beans, coleslaw, and dessert. Carol Corey, Eric’s mother, said the hunt – created as part of the Eric Corey Foundation – means a lot to her and it continues in his honor.
“We lost Eric in January 2012, and it was important to him. He told us just several months before he passed, ‘No matter what, Mom and Dad, don’t let the foundation go under,’ and so our plan is to keep it going as long as we possibly can. And with the help through the community, they’re making his legacy continue,” said Corey.
Each year, the Eric Corey Foundation holds the Turkey Tracks Hunt for handicapped and terminally-ill hunters, giving them a chance to do something they love that they might not otherwise be able to do. Last year, a fish fry was held at the Moose Lodge, but this year a larger fish dinner is planned on March 2, with doors opening at 5 p.m. at the community center.
All proceeds from the night will go toward the hunt planned for April 26, 27, and 28. Entertainment will be provided by Quentin Flagg – a world-famous entertainer from Argos who has traveled the United States, opened for Tracy Byrd, and made an appearance on the Ricki Lake Show – and the Indiana Blues Brothers will also perform.
This year, Corey said the Turkey Tracks Hunt will provide more than 30 handicapped hunters with the opportunity to get out in the field.
