Disabled Vets License Plate Bill Awaits Governor’s Signature

A bill seeking to expand eligibility for a disabled Hoosier veteran license plate, authored by State Sen. Jim Banks, recently passed through the House of Representatives by a vote of 92-2. The legislation now heads to the governor’s desk where it awaits his signature.

The bill, Senate Bill 403, allows a person to receive a disabled Hoosier veteran license plate if the applicant has been rated at least 50 percent disabled by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs with at least a 30 percent mobility disability rating. Currently, veterans must be rated 100 percent disabled to qualify for the plate.

Banks said the change will ensure more veterans are recognized for their great sacrifice and service to their country, as a number of men and women who he feels deserve the recognition don’t receive it due to current license plate standards. He said expanding eligibility for the plate is another way for the state to provide for its veterans.

Disabled Hoosier veteran license plates allow drivers to park in areas designated for disabled drivers. The plates also qualify drivers for a Hoosier Golden Passport at all Indiana Department of Natural Resource facilities.
