Absentee Voting Starts, Voter Registration Ends Today

Today is the last day to register to vote and the first day to vote absentee for the May 7 special election in Starke County.

If you have not previously registered to vote in Starke County, today is the last day you may do so. Registration is available in the Starke County Clerk’s office. If you reside in the Knox Community School voting district, you are eligible to vote in the special election on May 7.

Absentee voting begins today at 8 a.m. in the second floor meeting room of the Starke County Courthouse. You may vote absentee Monday through Friday from 8 a.m to noon and from 1–4 p.m. until Friday, May 3. Saturday, April 27 and Saturday, May 4 from 8 a.m. to noon and 1–4 p.m. have been set aside as available dates for you to vote absentee. The last day in which to vote absentee is Monday, May 6 from 8 a.m. to noon. Polls will be open in Center, California and Washington Townships on May 7 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

There is one question on the ballot and the question pertains to the allowance of a construction and renovation project at the Knox Elementary School – specifically the Palmer Wing. The ballot question asks for you to accept or reject a request by the Knox Community School Board for this project that “would not cost not more than $16,000,000 and is estimated to increase the property tax rate for debt service by a maximum of $0.2802 per $100 of assessed valuation.”
