The Knox Board of Public Works held discussion with a resident concerning her water and sewer bill.

Janet Black explained to the board members that there was a water leak detected underneath her house and she didn’t know about it. Her son had fixed the leak but she was shocked when she got her water bill and it was $410.47 – a far cry from her regular bill of $61.00.

Clerk-Treasurer Jeff Houston told her that they have adjusted the sewer portion of the bill to help her out, but they cannot budge on the water portion of the bill as they are controlled by the state as far as water use. She argued that she shouldn’t have to pay the full amount of the bill as she didn’t know about the leak and it wasn’t water she technically used.

Mayor Rick Chambers said they can’t help her anymore as they did adjust her bill to $207.20 and can not adjust beyond that. He reiterated that they have to follow state statutes and guidelines that pertain to that subsidy.

Black still argues her responsibility to the bill and will seek legal counsel as to how to proceed with her situation.
