Memorial Day Events Planned for May 27

 
 
Memorial Day is just seven days away and a number of area VFWs and American Legions are preparing for ceremonies and other events to commemorate the holiday dedicating to remembering those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

In Starke County, the Knox VFW will be holding their parade march on Memorial Day, May 27, at 9 a.m. beginning at the county courthouse where a short ceremony will be held. Following that, the group will march to Oak Hill Cemetery where they will hold another short ceremony to reflect on the fallen soldiers who fought to uphold our way of life.

In North Judson, Harry L. Keller will conduct services with the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion on Sunday, May 26 at 11:30 a.m. at Round Lake Cemetery. On Monday, the groups will hold their parade from the old fire station on Keller Avenue to Central Avenue and finally to Pioneer Cemetery, where they will hold services at 9 a.m. At 10 a.m., the group will arrive at San Pierre Cemetery, and at 11 a.m., they will deposit a wreath in the river near Highway 421. Finally, the services will conclude at 11:15 a.m. at Velmar Memorial Park in LaCrosse.

The American Legion and VFW in Winamac will conduct graveyard services on Memorial Day and hold a community service at 11 a.m. at the courthouse, followed by a short dedication at the pocket park at the corner of Washington and Monticello streets.

In LaPorte, the VFW post will be open from noon to 6 p.m. Before then, however, the post will hold a Memorial Day service at Fox Park at 8 a.m. The American Legion in LaPorte will hold their annual Memorial Day service of listing all of the deceased veterans in the county at Fox Park at 10 a.m., when they will read the names of those who either lived in or held their funeral services in the county.

The Plymouth VFW and American Legion will hold a cemetery at the courthouse at 10 a.m., followed by a march to the river bridge, then to the cemetery. The groups will put the wreaths out at the courthouse and hold a short ceremony before traveling to the bridge and out to the cemetery.
