Marshall County Commissioners Discuss Jail Nurse Contract, Tort Claim

Marshall County Sheriff Tom Chamberlin approached the commissioners last week requesting payment for a part-time nurse for the jail on a bi-weekly basis instead of the standard monthly basis.

Chamberlin explained to the commissioners that he tried to include the position in a contract with IU Health for the jail physician but a long delay in securing that contract has provided problems. He has hired a nurse with the proper qualifications to work a maximum of 20 hours per pay period at a rate of $25.00 per hour.

The commissioners decided to not allow the nurse to work at the jail until a contract has been drawn up with a nurse. The contract will be reviewed and approved by the commissioners before employment can take place.

The commissioners also discussed a tort claim notice filed by a former dispatcher who claims she was wrongfully terminated and filed an EEOC complaint. The claim has been filed with the insurance company and County Attorney James Clevenger recommended against immediate mediation by the commissioners.
