Three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Tony Stewart was injured in an accident with five laps to go at a sprint car race at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa on Monday night.

A lapped car had spun and stopped and Stewart had nowhere to go. His car hit the lapped car which flipped Stewart’s sprint car. He was assisted from his car by emergency officials, transported to a local hospital and underwent surgery to repair a broken leg. Reports indicate that he suffered a broken tibia and fibula in the crash.

Stewart will not be driving in his weekend’s Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen International and a backup driver will be called in to fill his seat. Regretfully, he will not be able to race in the inaugural Bob Newton Hoosier Tire Classic on Saturday, Aug. 17 at Plymouth Speedway.

The always exciting Sprints on Dirt series will still be a feature in the event as well as UMP Modifieds, USAC 600 Winged Sprints and USAC 600 Restricted Wing Sprints.

A Meet and Greet with Tony Stewart scheduled at the Newton Center in Lakeville is also tentatively scheduled as it’s unclear if Stewart will be able to attend. He is loyal to the Newton family, to Hoosier Tire and to Plymouth Speedway and he will make every attempt to make good on his visit. His health is the first priority and his family, friends and fans want him to get well as soon as possible.
