Knox Mayor Rick Chambers opened seven bids for the proposed Starke County Jail water project. The members of the the Board of Public Works heard all of the bids as they were presented Wednesday morning.

Several representatives from a number of the bidding companies were present when the bids were presented as well as Starke County Auditor Kay Chaffins and Starke County Commission President Kathy Norem.

JD Excavating, Haskins Underground, H&G Underground, Hunter Transit, Thomas Excavating and Welding, Mark Milo Enterprises, and Geyer Construction all submitted bids. The bidding was for the expansion of the water capacity into the area that the Starke County Jail will be housed.

The bids ranged from $40,200 to $93,270, the lowest of which came from Mark Milo Enterprises in Knox. The members of the Board of Works voted to accept the lowest conforming bid upon the review of bid specs and recommendation of Territorial Engineers, City Attorney David Matsey and the Starke County Commissioners.

The bids included two alternate mandatory bids which includes work to be done by the city of Knox in this project. The city will pay what is proposed in the alternate bids and the county will pay the remainder of the claims.
