Town of Hamlet Approves Advertisement of Ordinance Amendment

The Hamlet Town Board has published an amendment to an ordinance that pertains to the removal of weeds and rank vegetation within the town limits of Hamlet.

The amendment states that residents shall cut and remove weeds and other rank vegetation from their property. Growth should not exceed six inches in height.

If found to be in violation, the Clerk-Treasurer shall send the landowner a notice by mail or personal service by a Hamlet Police Officer. The officer may also issue a citation in lieu of the letter. The vegetation must be mowed within five days of the notice. If the property owner fails to comply, the employees or contractors may enter the property and remove the weeds or other rank vegetation. Landowners will receive one warning and/or letter per year.

Violations of this ordinance will result in a $25 fine. Each reoccurring violation will result in fines not to exceed $200. If the fines are not paid to the Clerk-Treasurer within 30 days, the late penalty will be $50. If the fine is not paid within 45 days, a tax lien will be placed on the property. If the employees of the Town of Hamlet mow the residence, the homeowner will be fined $150 plus any other occurring cost.
