Tips for Fire Prevention Week

This week is Fire Prevention Week. Knox-Center Township Fire Chief Kenny Pfost said one thing to remember is to have an escape ladder in the house if you own a two-story house, make sure your home’s address is visible for firefighters from the road and check your smoke detector’s batteries.

“This time of the year is always a good time to change the battery in your smoke detectors. You also need to be checking the batteries at least once a month. If you hear smoke detectors chirp, it’s time to change the batteries,” explained Pfost.

He also reminds you to never leave candles unattended.

“Make sure you put your candles out before you leave the house, practice your exit drills – have at least two ways out and practice those regularly. Brush season is upon us. It’s always good not to burn on windy days. Fortunately, it hasn’t been too dry yet. We’ve had a good amount of rain so far,” Pfost explained.

Firefighters will be visiting the local elementary and head start schools this week to teach the students about fire safety.

“We talked to them about knowing their address, calling 911, smoke detectors – learning what that sound is, and stop, drop and roll. We also teach them to know two ways out and practicing exit drills,” said Pfost.

You can find tons of companies that help clean up after a fire. If you have any more questions about fire safety, call (574) 772-4141.
