State Board of Education Approves Final School Grades

The Indiana State Board of Education last week approved final grades for Indiana schools, which were submitted by the Department of Education to fulfill federal and state accountability requirements for the 2012-2013 school year.

According to the report, Indiana schools saw improvement over the prior school year, with 67 percent of all schools receiving an A or B grade, up from 62 percent in 2012. On top of that, there was a 10 percent increase in schools that earned A’s.

In public schools, 65 percent were A’s or B’s in 2013, up from 58 percent in 2012. The percentage of public schools with D’s or F’s decreased from 20 percent in 2012 to 16 percent in 2013. Indicating a fairly stable model, there were only 72 schools whose grades varied by more than two grade levels, representing about 4 percent of all schools.

Sarah O’Brien, district 4 representative to the board, said the increased score is a credit to the hard work of students, teachers and families, and it’s encouraging to see these schools make continued gains in student academic performance.
