The town of Winamac will save roughly $12,000 a year by privatizing the collection of garbage and recycling in the town, according to Town Manager Jim Conner. Conner told WKVI that the town council this week decided to accept a bid from Advanced Disposal Services to provide garbage and recycling services for the town at a cost of $141,408 for the first year.

Conner said the town had paid roughly $156,000 last year to provide the service themselves and decided to accept bids to see if they could save some money by hiring a company to provide the service instead. Three bids were submitted, with Advanced Disposal Services providing the lowest bid.

The contract, Conner said, will last for five years. When the town provided the service, Conner said they saw an annual increase in cost of roughly five percent; now, with Advanced Disposal Services providing the service, they expect to see less than a five percent increase per year, saving them even more money over the duration of the contract.
