Two Christmas Decoration Contests Scheduled for Dec. 21

Although several muncipalities have already held their outdoor Christmas decoration contests, there are still two local contests taking place in Hamlet and throughout Starke County. The town of Hamlet is holding an outdoor Christmas decoration contest on Saturday, Dec. 21 from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. CT, and WKVI is hosting the first-ever Country Christmas Contest.

For the Hamlet contest, residents with outdoor Christmas displays are urged to light those displays to be part of the contest while judging is taking place. Clerk-Treasurer Kristina Pitts told WKVI that residents don’t need to register for the contest; you just need to make sure your outdoor display is in working order during the time of the judging.

The officials will give the address to the clerk-treasurer and she will send a check to the residences for the top three displays. The winner will receive $100, second place will get $75 and third place gets $50.

Meanwhile, the WKVI Country Christmas Contest gives residents of rural Starke County the chance to participate in a tradition often left to the city folk. WKVI General Manager Jerry Curtis said that the idea came about as the result of a post on WKVI’s Facebook page.

“It happened this morning in response to a posting on Facebook. Someone wrote in, ‘Well, how about something for some of us out in the country?’ And in about five minutes, the idea came up and we put it all together and it was a result of that Facebook posting that was on Facebook this morning,” Curtis said. To participate, you must be outside city limits in Starke County and have a decorated home. The first place winner will receive $100, second place $50 and third place $25.

To sign up, call (574) 772-6241 and submit your name and address. On Dec. 21 beginning at 6 p.m., WKVI station members will visit your home and judge your decorations.
