Officers arrived to find the two-vehicle head-on accident. Fortunately, the driver of the SUV was alert and talking and was not trapped in his vehicle. The female driver of the car, however, was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated.
Starke County EMS along with the Bass Lake Fire Department successfully extricated 19-year-old Mikinzie Wilson of Knox before taking her down the road to the Samaritan Helicopter to be flown to South Bend Memorial Hospital.
The driver of the SUV, Douglas W. Cady, 26 of Knox, was taken by ambulance to IU Health Starke Hospital and later transferred to South Bend Memorial as well.
The crash remains under investigation, with the cause not yet determined pending the investigation by the Indiana State Police vehicle crash reconstructionist. Alcohol and drug tests will also be performed on both drivers as part of the investigation.
The Starke County Sheriff’s Department was aided by the Indiana State Police Vehicle Crash Investigation unit, the Bass Lake and Knox fire departments, and Starke County EMS.
