The Knox Community School Board is hosting a community meeting tonight in the high school cafeteria to discuss the proposed balanced calendar with parents, students and the general public.

Superintendent A.J. Gappa said this is simply an informational meeting.

“We’re just trying to get information out to the public to show them what a balanced calendar really is. There’s a lot of misconceptions and a lot of false information out there about a balanced calendar and we’re just trying to show how it will affect the students that go through school, when it might start and end throughout a school year and what the break times may be,” explained Gappa.

Information from school officials whose corporations already operate on a balanced calendar will also be given.

Not one, but all three school corporations in the county are considering this change as all three systems are part of the J.E.S.S.E. Co-op and the North-Central Area Vocational Co-op.

“We try to maintain similar calendars. We want to start close to the same time and end close at the same time. There may be a few tweaks of a day or two here and there that are different, but for the most part we’re on the same calendar. Because we share so many students in vocational programs and also kids in the special education programs, we try to stay on the same type of calendar so we don’t have big splits in time off. That just creates problems for everybody.”

The balanced calendar discussion will begin tonight at 6 p.m. CT in the Knox High School Cafeteria.
