Gas Price Statistics and Outlook

The National average for regular unleaded gas in March was $3.50 which is 17 cents higher than in February but the lowest price for the month since 2010.

According to the AAA Hoosier Motor Club, March prices averaged $3.69 per gallon in 2013 and $3.82 per gallon in 2012.

Gas prices are less expensive than in recent years primarily because many refineries increased capacity to take advantage of North American crude oil production. Gasoline demand was not high this winter due to strong storms and colder than normal temperatures.

Despite an increase in the overall demand for gas, most refineries will have completed maintenance by the end of April, which should allow gasoline supplies to build in advance of the summer driving season.

AAA stats indicate that gas prices have increased in April three out of the previous five years.
