Knox High School Student Receives Lilly Endowment Scholarship

This year’s Starke County Community Foundation 2014 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar is from Knox High School.

As this year’s winner, Rachel Lenig will receive a four-year, full-tuition scholarship to an Indiana college of her choice, plus a $900 yearly stipend for required books and equipment.

Lenig was chosen from a field of 14 applicants by the Starke County Community Foundation Scholarship Committee. She is pursuing a degree in elementary education.

Applications for this prestigious award were scored on academic performance, volunteer and paid work, school activities and honors, and a series of essays. Five finalists were selected for a final interview and these finalists were asked to write an impromptu essay. Out of those finalists, one nominee was recommended for the scholarship and that recommendation was sent to the Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc. for a final selection.

Lenig was the eventual winner of the scholarship. The remaining four finalists who were interviewed by the committee were awarded a one-time $500 scholarship from the Starke County Community Foundation. Those students were Taylor Kemble from Knox High School, Kendra Sauer from Oregon-Davis High School, Madeleine Silvey from John Glenn High School and Kemble Manning from Culver Academy.
