The project supervisor of the 7th Road project in Marshall County gave an update of that project and the Metronet project to the commissioners Monday morning.
Bart Trester from USI told the commissioners that a box culvert was installed, crews cleared the right of way by Michigan Road and an abandoned house has been demolished.
Trester presented a rather large change order.
“Change order number two is to be processed for unsuitable soil,” explained Trester. “Per our field review, the existing soils are not suitable by specifications for use as subgrade due to the high organic content. Therefore, the material will need to be removed. The approximate cost is $450,000 to $500,000. We are still negotiating the pricing with the contractor.”
The soil bore that was previously done didn’t measure the different layers of soil as it changed the deeper it went. Any construction on top of organic soil is not stable. Organic soil cannot be within two feet of a subgrade and Trester explained that it’s there and needs to be removed. Trester is working with INDOT to see if funds are available to help offset the cost. No decision was made on the change order.
Trester said the Metronet project is moving along.
“The contractor started at Hoosier Tire and they’re moving north. they’ve installed about 10,000 feet. It’s not what they wanted but we had a few issues early on that we’ve taken care of. The Metronet project for the city of Plymouth will not start until June 12.”
