Open House for The Crossing

The CrossingThe new alternative faith-based school, the Crossing, hosted an open house Wednesday at their location in Knox. So far about 10 students are enrolled to attend. They will be hosting another open house today from 8 a.m until 3 p.m at the old Sears store in the Mint Leaf Plaza off of U.S. 35.

Although the Crossing is new to the Starke County area, there are locations scattered all across the state, including schools in South Bend and Plymouth. The school is aimed at students who are struggling in a traditional educational system. Students who pass will graduate with a high school diploma.

The Crossing operates as a combination of pull out courses, where teachers focus on a particular subject with the students and computer based learning through a program called Apex that teaches state standard courses. Campus administrator, Courtney Gant, describes it as a mix of small group learning and computer learning. There is also a portion of the curriculum that is privately funded and focuses around Christian components. Gant explained that The Crossing works to transform students in an effort to transform communities.

“Our mission statement is empowering struggling students to become contributing members of their community through academics, job training and faith-based mentoring” Gant told WKVI during an interview.
