Summer School Reading Remediation Helped Third Graders Advance to Fourth Grade

6-27-14 Summer Reading picThe IREAD-3 is a state-wide test that all Hoosier third graders are required to pass in order to advance to the next grade. The test is initially given in the springtime. During the first distribution of the test 90% of Knox Community Elementary School students passed. Out of the 15 who did not pass, six were eligible for good cause exemptions. Five of the students were special needs and one student was an English language learner. The students who fall into the good cause exemption category are not subject to be retained because of their results on the I-Read test. All students who did not pass the springtime test were invited to summer school. Of all the students invited, 14 attended. Students rotated instructional stations and took part in the Wilson Reading Program throughout the course of summer school. All 14 students retested and 10 passed. The four students who did not pass fell into the good cause exemption category. Due to the efforts to the summer school staff, all of the third graders will be attending fourth grade in the fall.
