Look Out for Counterfeit Money

The La Porte Police Department has received several reports of counterfeit $20 bills over the last two weeks. There are several ways to spot a fake bill. Hold it up to a light source and look for a security thread that is embedded in the bill. Check for a watermark and an empty space to the right of the person’s portrait on the bill. You should be able to see the watermark from both sides. On the new $10, $20 and $50 bills, look for the corresponding number in the bottom right hand corner. It changes color from green to black, then black to green. If you receive a counterfeit bill, contact your local law enforcement agency immediately.
