Voting Machines and Ballots Impounded, Judge Considering Recount Commission Members

The voting machines and ballots from the four Wayne and lone Railroad Township Precincts in the Nov. 4 General Election have been impounded to facilitate recounts in two very close races. Republican Party officials sought a recount on behalf of 4th District Council candidate Don White. He lost to Democrat Pamela Stalbaum by two votes in the race to succeed Marvin McLaughlin. That seat represents Wayne and Railroad Townships.

Incumbent Democrat Railroad Township Trustee Roger Chaffins Sr. has also filed a recount petition in his race. He lost to Republican Mandy Thompson by three votes.

Starke Circuit Clerk Evelyn Skronski tells WKVI News Starke Circuit Judge Kim Hall has asked the chairs of both parties to each bring him names of three potential members to serve on a recount commission. It will be comprised of one Democrat, one Republican and someone technologically savvy and familiar with the electronic voting machines used in the election.

After that panel is appointed, Skronski says they will meet and review the procedures, vote totals, ballots and other pertinent information and present a report to the judge. The candidates and their attorneys can be present during that time, but the meeting is not open to the public. State law gives the judge until Dec. 20 to reach a decision, but he has the power to order an extension should more time be needed.
