American Automotive Association Holiday Travel Forecast

AAAThe number of Americans estimated to hit the road this holiday travel season is the highest that AAA has ever recorded. The end of the year holiday period runs from Dec. 23 through Jan. 4. Triple A predicts 98.6 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more during the year-end holiday season, showing a 4 percent increase from the number of travelers in 2013. The increase in the number of holiday motorists can be chocked up to the national average price of gasoline being the its lowest level in five years. On average, Americans are paying 70 cents less than a year ago.

More specifically, Hoosiers are paying even less at the pump. One year ago in December a gallon of unleaded gasoline cost $3.17. This December, Indiana residents are now paying around $2.39 a gallon, saving 8 cents more than the American average. Decreased gas prices has increased Americans’ disposable income 3.5 percent from last year’s level. This makes planning holiday trips much more financially feasible.

The American Automotive Association predicts 1.1 million Americans will need roadside assistance this holiday season. The main troubles travelers face are lock outs, flat tires, and dead batteries. AAA suggests checking the condition of your tires and batteries and before embarking on your holiday getaway.
