Hoekman Sentenced on Burglary Count

The 23-year-old Knox man accused of burglarizing USA Café in August of 2013 was sentenced yesterday by Circuit Court Judge Kim Hall.

Michael Hoekman pleaded guilty to a single Class B felony count of Burglary as part of a plea agreement in front of a Magistrate Judge on Wednesday. The state dismissed all other charges as part of the deal.

During his arrest, Hoekman was found to have stolen several items from the location, including: a computer, video gaming system, and handgun. He was allegedly battling substance abuse problems at the time of the incident, but completed a Salvation Army treatment program to resolve the issue.

The state says the victim of the burglary was satisfied with the plea agreement prior to sentencing.

Judge Hall sentenced Hoekman to nine years, three of which will be suspended. In explaining the sentence, Hall said Hoekman will serve three years in the Indiana Department of Corrections, three years on Home Detention, and the remaining three years on probation.
