Mary Young of Auburn, Indiana told Starke County Magistrate Jeanene Calabrese that she did in fact lock her son in his bedroom and would not let him out of the room throughout the night. Her 10-year-old son, who has a form of autism called Asberger’s Syndrome, could not even leave the room to use the bathroom which caused further problems.
Calabrese accepted the plea agreement and Young was sentenced on the count of neglect of a dependent. With this agreement, the felony charge was reduced to a Class A misdemeanor. Young was sentenced to 12 months in the Starke County Jail with all of the sentence suspended to be served on probation. A no contact order with her son will remain in place while she serves her sentence. She will need to participate in classes as recommended by the probation department.
