Commissioners to Consider Starke County Sheriff’s Request for a Second K9

starke-county-courthouseThe Starke County Commissioners could consider Sheriff Bill Dulin’s request for a second K9 when they meet this evening. Dulin previously asked the commissioners for their blessing to raise funds through donations to buy a dog capable of detecting drugs and tracking people. He says the dog would only be purchased if enough money was raised to do so.

The dog and its yet-to-be-announced handler would work midnights, which would cut down on overtime for the current K9 officer. Dulin notes Starke County ranks highest in the number of meth labs in the state and says a second drug dog would take a significant bite out of the problem. The commissioners were not opposed to the suggestion when it came up at their March 16 meeting but did defer a formal decision.

Other items on the agenda for tonight’s 6 p.m. Starke County Commissioners meeting include an update from county highway superintendent Rik Ritzler, a proclamation of April as Child Abuse Prevention Month, scheduling of a tax sale and discussion of upcoming Starke County Economic Development Foundation projects.
