Commissioners to Discuss Memorial Day Flags

The Starke County Commissioners hope to settle what has become a contentious issue when they meet this evening. Historically the county has purchased flags to place on the graves of veterans each Memorial Day. They coordinate the project with the local veterans service organizations. This year questions arose about how funds would be distributed. The commissioners have stressed their commitment to the tradition in prior meetings and have vowed to ensure every veteran in the county has a grave marker during the upcoming holiday.

In other business before the commissioners, county IT director Joe Short will present a contract with CenturyLink for service at the new jail. It’s still scheduled to open the first of June, with a public open house planned Friday, May 22. The commissioners meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the county annex building.

The Starke County Council also meets tonight. The agenda for their 5:30 p.m. session includes an annual report from Marshall-Starke, a quarterly report from IU Health and a presentation about the Starke County Youth Club. Sheriff Bill Dulin will request an appropriation from the jail portion of the county adjusted gross income tax fund for a maintenance position at the new jail, which will also be addressed through a proposed amendment to the salary ordinance.
