Starke County Council Authorizes Mailing of Inkeepers Tax Letters

starke-county-courthouseStarke County inkeepers taxes are now payable to the county treasurer’s office each month. The forms that need to be submitted with those payments are available on the county’s website, and any questions can be directed to the treasurer’s office. Payments were previously submitted to the state.

Any dwelling rentals for less than 30 days are subject to the tax collection, according to Starke County Attorney Marty Lucas. He notes campsites are an exception. Lucas concedes it is difficult to police private party rentals and adds the statute does not provide explicit authority for doing so. County officials are mainly concerned about collecting taxes owed on short-term property rentals at Bass and Koontz Lakes during the summer months. The county council on Monday agreed to look into the cost of doing an all-doors mailing to Bass and Koontz Lake residents with general information about the tax and how it is to be paid.
