This week marks educational opportunity for conservationists, especially when it comes to handling firewood.

EAB Awareness week was declared by Indiana Governor Mike Pence to help bring more attention to the issue, changing the state’s forest landscape. EAB, otherwise known as the Emerald Ash Borer, is a microscopic beetle that feeds off Ash Trees.

The spread of the EAB has been affecting the Midwest, but began affecting Indiana in 2004 according to Purdue Extension.

To help limit the spread of the beetle, state officials are asking the public to respect firewood guidelines. The state of Indiana requests that firewood be marked by a compliance sticker.

Because the insects live in the wood, limiting the movement of firewood can often help slow the spread of the EAB.
