SCILL Students Await Car Show Experience

SCILLCar lovers of all ages will have an opportunity to view a bit of craftsmanship this weekend in Knox.

The Starke County Initiative for Lifelong Learning is hosting its Auto Tech Car Show on Saturday. The SCILL partnership focuses on workforce development in the local area.

Turnout for specialty vehicle shows often depend on the weather, but could see hundreds of cars register. Coordinator for Student Services and Programs Jerry Gurrado says it’s about as up-close and personal as you can get.

“The hoods will be opened. 99-percent of the time whoever the folks are where it’s their vehicles, they’ll be sitting their on hand in a lawn chair more than willing to answer a thousand questions,” says Gurrado.

Judges will be brought in from Michigan City to prevent bias in the evaluation process.

Cars can enter in one of several categories, including: Antiques, Street Machines, Original, and Custom cars. The quality of the work on the car, and the basic aesthetics are considered part of the judging process.

The car show is considered a joint effort between students in the SCILL welding department and the auto-tech department. Those students will be setting-up the site and helping with clean-up efforts.

Gurrado says there is some major local talent.

“The craftsmanship, the true artistry, the imagination behind it that is all local, homegrown stuff, it’s just beyond belief,” says Gurrado.

The SCILL Auto Tech Car Show will take place from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at 13-hundred Kloeckner Drive in Knox.

Trophies will be awarded to the winners in each category.
