Do Your Part, Plus Some Art with the First Ever Community Canvas Fundraiser

The cost of fireworks has sky rocketed! To help account for rising prices, various fireworks fundraisers have been happening leading up to the Starke County Independence Day celebration. According to Mayor Rick Chambers the display costs several thousand dollars. Since the show is provided for the community, members of the community are asked to give a little to help with the cost.

A unique new fundraiser is set to take place tonight from 6 until 8 pm in the Nancy Dembowski Community Center. For only $25 you can participate in Knox’s first ever Community Canvas event.

Councilwoman Linda Berndt said she wanted to try something a bit different during her last term as a member of the council,“we will have an instructor and she is a local person, Tabitha Dillner. She will be coming to instruct us, kind of like ‘stroke by stroke’ instructions to do this painting. The painting is going to be a fireworks picture with a reflection of fireworks on a lake and it’s very beautiful.”

Walk-ins are welcome, however Berndt and Dillner suggest calling prior to the event so they can be sure enough supplies will be available. Linda Berndt can be reached at 772-4815 and the number for artist Tabitha Dillner is (219) 314-2030. All proceeds collected from the Community Canvas event go towards the Starke County fireworks fund to help pay for the spectacular display scheduled for July 3rd at the Starke County Airport.

So far more than three-thousand dollars has been raised from the Port-a-Pit chicken sale and the dinner at the Downtown Depot. This is a good start but more money is still needed. Raffle tickets are being sold for $25 a piece from now until July 3rd. As long as there are some left they can even be purchased during the night of the fireworks. If all tickets are purchased there will be 6 $500 prizes will be awarded, the prize amount may vary depending on the amount of tickets sold. These tickets can be purchased at City Hall anytime during business hours from the mayor, the clerk treasurer or any city council member.
