Train Hits Oversize Load, Shuts Down U.S. 35

IMG_5167U.S. 35 through downtown Knox is shut down after an eastbound Norfolk Southern Train hit a southbound oversize load that was crossing the tracks this morning.

Indiana State Police officials tell WKVI News the track was clear when truck and trailer carrying the cargo started across it. The vehicle was moving so slowly the crossing arm dropped before it cleared the track, and the train hit the rear of the trailer.

IMG_5179No load was lost, but the front of the train and the back of the trailer both sustained damages. An insurance adjuster for the railroad is en route to Knox to assess damage to the train and determine when it can be moved. Another trailer also needs to be brought in to offload the cargo and get it out of the highway. Until it is cleared, the only open crossing in downtown Knox is at the intersection of McGill and John Streets.
