A local lawmaker will spend his legislative break looking into whether smoking should be banned in bars, casinos and private clubs, among other topics. Rep. Tom Dermody, R-LaPorte, will serve as vice chairman of the Interim Study Committee on Public Policy. That panel has also been charged with studying state regulations of e-cigarettes and possible increases in cigarette taxes.
Interim study committee members discuss, debate and conduct in-depth review of the topics assigned to their committees. They also receive public testimony and are able to work out the specifics of potential legislation before it is introduced in the upcoming legislative session.
Most interim committees will start meeting this month and wrap up their work in October. Visit http://iga.in.gov/documents/c2bb0d58 for a complete list of interim study committee topics.
