Fourth Candidate Files for Coroner Vacancy

A fourth Democrat has filed to run for Starke County Coroner. Starke County Democrats will caucus tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at the Knox VFW to choose a successor to Adam Gray. He was elected in November but stepped down recently due to work and family obligations.

Former Starke County Sheriff’s Deputy Ronnie Lawson filed his candidacy for the office on Friday, according to party chair Kenny Wallace. He joins Michelle Prater, Julie Carmean and Dannie Hoffer, Jr.on the list of candidates. Gray beat Hoffer in last May’s primary.

Precinct committee members will choose Gray’s successor. The first candidate to get a majority vote will be declared the winner, with the one getting the least number of votes to be eliminated after each ballot. The winner will serve the remainder of Gray’s term.

Jasper County Coroner Andrew Boersma has been assisting Starke County on an interim basis since Gray resigned from the position.
