Don’t panic if you see a lot of emergency response vehicles this morning in LaPorte County. Emergency responders from LaPorte, Starke and St. Joseph Counties are taking part in a large-scale training exercise. The scenario involves two simulated train derailments.
The setup for the one along Hamilton Street in Union Mills involves a HAZMAT collision between two.. The second scenario on U.S. 6 at the Kankakee River Bridge includes a train derailment, petroleum fire and the river.
At least 10 families from the Union Mills/Wellsboro area will be role playing and will be included in an evacuation exercise. Both practice exercises should wrap up by early afternoon. Motorists are asked to be patient in the event of traffic delays or disruptions in those areas and keep in mind it is only a training exercise and not a real emergency response. Officials note this is a valuable training that will prepare responders to handle a real disaster.
