Starke County Students Get a Dose of Reality

Today the Knox Middle School is hosting a “Reality Store” for 8th grade students from Knox, North Judson, Oregon-Davis and Culver schools.

Students select a career and collect an appropriate paycheck. Then, visiting locations around the Weinberg Gymnasium, they learn what the costs are for food, rent, insurance, utilities, entertainment, and other normal expenses for living a comfortable lifestyle. Often the students find they do not have enough projected income for their chosen lifestyle as they learn what it costs for everyday living.
Many area business representatives are set up in booths to talk with the young people.
Students from North Judson, Oregon-Davis and Culver will visit the “store” this morning until noon; Knox students will participate from noon until 2 p.m. Parents and the public are welcome to view the activity.
Knox Middle School counselor Sonia Hensley is coordinating the project.
