O-D Board Tables Calendar, Discusses ISTEP Results

During a busy agenda last night, the Oregon-Davis School Board tabled approval of the 2016-2017 calendar, until dates for statewide fall testing are determined. The proposed calendar follows those of Knox, North Judson-San Pierre schools and the Jesse cooperative.

The school’s new School Resources Officer, John Kohles, was introduced and welcomed.

A public hearing was held to correct a typographical error in the Capital Projects Fund Plan. Later the plan was approved in board action.

Lawmasters, Inc. was approved to do repair of the roof dome this summer The project is part of a budget item approved earlier.

Principals Bill Bennett and Tim Pletcher gave a detailed media report of the results of the last I-STEP testing, which showed “significant growth”. 2016 testing begins in three weeks.

Approval was given for a 5th grade trip to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago in May and a senior class trip to Orlando, Florida in April.

A report on O-D’s participation in The Crossing alternative school program in Knox was given by Principal Pletcher. He and Principal Bennett announced an “intercession” program during the spring vacation to give students an opportunity for extra instruction.

O-D’s participation in the “Project Attend Starke County” was approved. The implementation is expected to decrease student truancy, working with the country’s Child Protective Services, court system and probation department. Knox and North Judson-San Pierre Schools are already participating.

The agenda for an executive session of the board, following the regular public meeting, included a discussion of collective bargaining.
