Eastern Pulaski School Board Approves Middle School Softball

Winamac WarriorWinamac Community Middle School will add a new athletic program for girls to the 2017 spring sports schedule. The Eastern Pulaski School Board last night unanimously approved the addition of softball for 7th and 8th grade girls. Superintendent Dan Foster told the board he’s confident the corporation can do it but added “it won’t be perfect the first year.”

Participants will play up to 10 games per season, depending on how many teams within a reasonable radius they can schedule. North Miami, Logansport and Lewis-Cass already have middle school softball programs. Pioneer and Rochester are also looking at adding them.

Eastern Pulaski Athletic Director Bill Ball says travel would be limited schools within an hour of Winamac, especially for games played on school nights.

Foster notes transportation both to the park for practice and to away games will be one of the challenges, since the school’s white vans are in use every night.

Winamac Community High School Softball Coach Jenny Belcher anticipates six to seven girls per grade level based on clinics she’s run in the past. Foster says adding softball will give middle school athletes more opportunities to compete and should not harm the track team’s numbers.
