Special Exception Sunday Sales Bill Headed to Governor’s Desk

DermodyIndiana could make an exception to its ban on Sunday alcohol sales this year to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the greatest spectacle in racing. State Rep. Tom Dermody, R-LaPorte, sponsored a bill to allow commemorative alcohol bottles to be sold the Sunday of the Indianapolis 500 at the brickyard to celebrate the 100th running of the race.

The measure passed in the House by a vote of 89-6. Dermody stresses it would be a one-time allowance strictly to help celebrate the race.

It would allow Indy 500 patrons to purchase and leave with a keepsake bottle. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway would be allowed to sell alcohol in commemorative bottles between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on May 29, 2016.

The bill is now awaiting Gov. Mike Pence’s signature.
